FBA Workbook
MISRULE alert:
A lot of people think because I use a ten day sample
of ABC data that they always need to collect ten days of data. Please
remember in the training session that I show you the following:
1) Terry
who we determined the function of his behavior by watching him for
30 minutes and using investigative skills paired with those 30 minutes.
2) Ryan
who we determined the function of his behavior by testing hypotheses
for seven different trips to Sam's Club.
3) Jay
who we determined the function of his behavior by pairing one year's
worth of data already collected with weather data and anecdotal
notes.
4) David
who we determined the function of his behavior by using anecdotal
notes, investigative skills and the testing of a hypothesis.
5) Scout
who we determined the function of her behavior by using ten days
of data collected.
My point
has always been that data collection does not consist of answering
16 questions for each child and presto the answer is clear. So many
school districts that I have worked with have used the indirect
method for every child and paired this with no direct observational
data. While this may work for some of the children, it is not the
answer for ALL children.
We cannot determine if
our interventions are successful if we do not know where we started.
The best
way to determine our starting baseline is by doing a functional
behavior assessment.

Remember most behaviors fall
into two categories:
Positive Reinforcement:
- access to:
- materials
- sensory input
*
- attention
Many people think "control" is
a function. There is no research indicating that this is a function.
If it helps you to think of it as "control of what they access
or escape" then that might help you make the transition.
Negative Reinforcement:
Escape from:
- work or activities
- people
- sensory
- pain
When we are working with our children who
have limited vocabularies it is very important to remember that
behaviors can be occurring because they need sensory input,
need to escape too much sensory, or they are in pain.

FBA Data Tool (NEW
1/7/10) special thanks to Denise Wilson who updated Gregory Burdett's
original version.
When you open this it will open a read
only file - YOU MUST save it to your computer first or
it will not work. This was done as a safeguard to anyone thinking
I had access to the data.
If you need to copy and paste the graphs
into a PPT and are having trouble- USE "Print Screen"
and then you can use that-or here is the old version:
