When you book training through Behavior Doctor Seminars, we send you a link to download free copies of our booklets for the training. To keep our costs low, we ask the institution bringing us in to provide printed copies for the participants or to share the link with all participants so they can print their own.
From time to time, people ask if we can print the books for them. We do not have the capability to print and ship booklets as we are a very tiny company with very few employees. We have set up all our books on a self-publishing site where you can order the books as cheaply as possible. They come bound with a glossy cover and last much longer than stapled copies. Here’s where you can find all current titles: www.behaviordoctorpublications.com .
We also have books written for Corwin Publishing and they are available through Sage Publishing:
- Positive Behavior Support at the Tertiary Level: Red Zone Strategies
- Positive Behavior Support at the Secondary “Targeted Group” Level: Yellow Zone Strategies
(We can’t send free copies of the Corwin books as Sage Publishing owns the copyright to those.)
Two New Books to Help with Putting PBIS in the IEP
Family Member IEP Booklet
Educator Member IEP Booklet
These two books are symbiotic. They go together and help family members and educators work together to create an awesome Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that incorporates PBIS into the IEP for behavioral issues. It also helps first-time family members understand what happens during an IEP meeting. The first meeting can be quite intimidating. We think you’ll like these booklets. Feel free to share.

We are including associate links to our favorite fidget tools. The links will take you to Amazon, so you may see pictures of what we are referring to. We use associate links so the link remains static. We may receive a small sum if you purchase the item through this link. (To be honest, we have had an associate account for over 8 years and I believe we have 80 cents in our account- so we do not use it to make money- just to keep the links connected for you).

Interventions in a Competing Pathway
This page is dedicated to sharing behavioral intervention plans. While there is no one answer for any behavior, hopefully, the examples on this page will help you come up with ideas to help develop your behavioral intervention plan. Remember, the function fuels the behavior. Here are some of our favorite functions to consider:
- gain attention from adults or peers
- escape attention from adults or peers
- gain access to preferred items or activities
- escape demands (work, tasks, chores)
- gain sensory input
- escape sensory input (sensory overload)
- escape pain (emotional or physical)
Since so many people confuse the term consequences for punishment, we sought to develop a new tool to help. We designed the Triple T- Triple R Competing Pathway.
We use the Triple T- which stands for Trigger-Target-impacT. These three cords are your summary statement. When this happens, the student/child does this, to gain or escape this. Once we know the summary statement, we can develop a plan that includes the Triple R- which stands for Revise the Environment-Replace the Behavior-Reframe the Response.
So, let’s start with something all age levels deal with, impulsive blurting. For the sake of this example, we will use teacher instruction as the trigger and peer attention as the impacT. We will give this example student at the age level of 13. The behavior only occurs in Math class. The student is very good at math and also very musically inclined. Most of the blurts are music-related yet tie into the lesson.
Taylor was a real student in Georgia that we worked with during our time at the Behavioral Intervention Program. Taylor performed after the first Friday, and the song was terrific. The teacher started recording Taylor’s songs because they were appropriate and always about a math concept. We can’t show you Taylor’s video but you can get an idea from looking at this great video from a teacher in Texas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHQHuWZBZlY&t=5s
Taylor’s example was a simple plan for a low-level behavior. We will keep adding examples of different types of responses.

None of these “tongue-in-cheek dolls” is meant to be a joke. We are dealing with serious behavioral issues and sharing proactive strategies to help these students be successful in the classroom. We are not against medication and truly believe some students need medication to be successful; however, it is not the educators’ place to recommend medication; therefore, we focus on the strategies you can employ in the classroom whether the student is medicated or not.

Dr. Riffel brings many “show and tell” items when she presents. People frequently ask where to purchase these items. We have set up an associate link page to Amazon where she purchases her products. We only used the associate link to keep the link from switching. We may make a small profit on your clicking the link; however, she has had the associate account for eight years and has not received any funds- so it’s very minimal. Just wanted to be transparent in the reason for the links.
